Mysuru: Director General of Police (Prisons and Correctional Services) Alok Kumar made a surprise visit to Mysuru Central Prison on Friday, inspected the facility and interacted with inmates. During the visit, he said mobile signals were being detected in certain parts of the prison and stressed the need for installing signal jammers at the earliest.The visit follows complaints about mobile phones being found inside prisons. Kumar warned inmates and others against possessing or facilitating the use of mobile phones, saying such acts are illegal and would invite action.Referring to the issue of illegal mobile phones in Bengaluru’s Parappana Agrahara Central Prison, he said around 300 phones had been seized in the last eight months. Authorities suspect some devices may still be inside and efforts are under way to trace them.Highlighting the challenges faced by prison authorities, Kumar said nearly 200 people enter prisons daily, making screening difficult. In some cases, SIM cards and mobile phones have reportedly been smuggled in by concealing them inside the body.“I will not say that there are no mobile phones in the prison. But necessary steps are being taken to bring the situation under control,” he said.On the recovery of a cellphone from former MP Prajwal Revanna’s cell at Parappana Agrahara prison, Kumar said the matter is under investigation and declined to share further details.According to prison officials, the DGP entered Mysuru Central Prison at 11.55am and inspected the premises for nearly an hour.
