Kanpur: A crocodile’s carcass was found in a mutilated state on the banks of the Ganga in Kanpur on Sunday morning. The reptile, about four to five feet long, was found with a broken skull, a damaged head, and severe injury marks on its body.According to locals, a few children were playing cricket on the Ganga riverbank near Makku Shahid ka Bhatta when they spotted the carcass. The children raised an alarm, following which residents of the surrounding area reached the spot.Locals suspected that the crocodile may have been trapped in a net set by poachers illegally fishing in the Ganga. They alleged that instead of freeing the reptile from the net, the poachers struck it on the head with a heavy object, leading to its death. After receiving information, police reached the spot and informed the Forest Department.“The Forest Department team will investigate the cause of the crocodile’s death. Further action will be taken on the basis of the post-mortem report and the investigation,” station in charge Sanjay Pandey said.
