T’puram: Construction of the breakwater at Muthalapozhi fishing harbour has resumed after a gap of nearly three to four months, with authorities reaching an understanding with the local fishing community over concerns raised about the scientific design of the structure. The work had remained stalled primarily following objections from fishermen, who had alleged that the construction of the breakwater, particularly the rubble-mound structure, was being carried out in an unscientific manner and could affect the safety and livelihood of the fishing community.Following the objections, the authorities held discussions with representatives of the fishermen community and addressed their concerns. An understanding was subsequently reached, paving the way for the resumption of the work. The authorities are also planning to expedite the construction of the breakwater so that the project can be completed within the scheduled timeframe. The work had also been affected by the monsoon, when rough sea conditions made it difficult to carry out construction activities at the site. With the sea becoming relatively calmer, work has now resumed and is progressing. The Muthalapozhi fishing harbour project has been closely watched by the local fishing community, particularly in view of concerns over navigation and safety in the harbour area. Fishermen had earlier raised apprehensions about whether the breakwater design would adequately address the challenging sea conditions at the harbour mouth. With the differences now resolved, authorities are hopeful of maintaining the pace of construction and completing the breakwater within the planned period. Officials said efforts would be made to avoid further interruptions to the work.
