New Delhi: Nine people have been arrested for allegedly being involved in the murder of a BSc student in southwest Delhi’s Baba Haridas Nagar on July 19.Police said the rivalry between two student groups escalated following an alleged incident involving the harassment of a woman student. A meeting was arranged to resolve the issue, but one group allegedly arrived armed with sticks and a pistol. A clash ensued, during which the student was shot in the head, while his friends were assaulted and injured.Police got to know around 4.35pm that a group of men had arrived on motorcycles and opened fire at a youth near Mitraon Bani in Baba Haridas Nagar. Deepanshu (20), a resident of Haryana’s Jhajjar, was rushed to hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.Complainant Kartik Maan told police that he, along with his friends Deepanshu and Nikku Rathi, had reached Mitraon village around 3.30pm. Ten minutes later, Deepanshu allegedly shared his location with his college friend, Arun, a resident of Panipat.According to the complaint, Arun and several of his associates soon reached the spot. Maan alleged that the group had assaulted them with sticks. Rathi sustained a head injury after being struck with a stick, while Deepanshu was shot. The accused fled after the attack.Investigation revealed that Deepanshu was a third-year BSc nursing student at a private university in Gurgaon, while Arun was a fourth-year student at the same institution.According to Maan, the two groups were earlier involved in disputes on the campus. He alleged that tensions escalated after he had intervened in a matter involving the harassment of a woman student by a person associated with the rival group.During the inspection of the crime scene, police recovered two empty 7.65mm cartridge cases, along with two motorcycles and a scooter. The weapon allegedly used in the murder was also seized, police said.A case was registered at Baba Haridas Nagar police station under various sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita pertaining to murder, attempt to murder and other offences.Deepanshu is survived by his father, who works in Gurgaon; his mother, a homemaker; and a younger brother.
