Santner, who missed MI’s opening game of the season vs KKR, has now linked up with the team and is set to be available for selection in their upcoming match on April 4. His absence in the first game was due to an extended personal leave, along with England all-rounder Will Jacks.

The left-arm spinning all-rounder’s arrival comes at a crucial time for Mumbai, who began their campaign on a strong note. MI registered a six-wicket win over KKR at the Wankhede Stadium, successfully chasing down a massive 220-run target. The opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton laid the foundation with a 148-run partnership, underlining the team’s batting strength.

Santner’s addition is expected to further improve the team’s balance. He is known for his economical spin bowling and his ability to hit well in the lower order, which makes both departments stronger. His presence can be crucial on slower surfaces like Delhi, where spin might be the key.

The 34-year-old has been a consistent performer in T20 cricket. In IPL 2025, he featured in 13 matches, picking up 10 wickets while maintaining a steady economy rate.

Santner recently led New Zealand to a runner-up finish at the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup, showcasing his leadership and all-around talent on the global stage.

MI end a big drought vs KKR

MI, five-time champions, want to get off to a good start this season after a few years of inconsistent campaigns, and they have already ended their drought of opening the season with a win. Adding Santner gives the team more tactical options, especially in managing the middle overs and controlling the run flow.

With DC also looking to settle into the tournament, the upcoming clash promises to be competitive. Santner’s arrival could be very important for Mumbai as they try to keep their winning streak going and make their campaign stronger in IPL 2026.
