MUMBAI: Mumbai’s electric vehicle population has crossed 77,000, with 77,196 EVs now registered in the city, even as Maharashtra has emerged as the country’s second-largest state for electric vehicles with a fleet of around 11.5 lakh.The figures, released around World EV Day observed on September 9, show the growing presence of electric mobility on Mumbai’s roads. Of the city’s total EV population, 40,086 are e-bikes and 30,137 are e-cars, with the remaining vehicles comprising other electric vehicle categories.Maharashtra’s total EV population stands at around 11.5 lakh, placing it behind Uttar Pradesh, which has about 18 lakh electric vehicles. Karnataka ranks third with around 9 lakh.
E-bikes make up the bulk of Maharashtra’s EV fleet
E-bikes account for around 9.6 lakh of Maharashtra’s 11.5 lakh electric vehicles, while e-cars number more than 1 lakh. The remaining vehicles comprise other categories of EVs.The state has been seeking to strengthen its position in electric mobility, with officials and industry observers pointing to purchase incentives, subsidies and lower battery manufacturing costs as factors that could accelerate adoption.A transport analyst from the Mumbai Mobility Forum said enhancing purchase incentives and subsidies, along with reducing battery manufacturing costs, could bring down vehicle prices and make e-cars more accessible.

Andheri has over 20,000 EVs
Among Mumbai’s regional transport office areas, Andheri has the largest combined count of e-BOVs and pure EVs in the data shown, with 11,553 e-BOVs and 8,836 pure EVs, taking its total to 20,389.Borivli has 10,989 e-BOVs and 6,218 pure EVs, for a combined 17,207. Wadala has 8,830 e-BOVs and 8,860 pure EVs, while Tardeo has 13,608 e-BOVs and 8,302 pure EVs.The figures indicate a substantial presence of electric vehicles across Mumbai’s major RTO jurisdictions, with both electric two-wheelers and cars contributing to the city’s growing EV population.
Govt push and EV adoption
The data comes as Maharashtra continues efforts to encourage cleaner mobility. The focus includes incentives and subsidies to increase EV adoption, while lower battery manufacturing costs are expected to help make electric cars more affordable.The state’s EV population of around 11.5 lakh puts Maharashtra behind only Uttar Pradesh nationally, while Mumbai alone accounts for more than 77,000 registered electric vehicles.
