Federal investigators confirmed an unspecified number of deaths as a result of a Ukrainian attack on the republic of Chuvashia on Tuesday, as Ukraine claimed it struck a military installation in the region.
Russia’s Investigative Committee, the country’s top investigative body, said regional authorities reported “fatalities and injuries” in the regional capital of Cheboksary, according to the Interfax news agency.
Unverified media reports claimed at least two people were killed, while 34 others were said to have been injured. A video circulating on social media showed a drone crashing into an apartment building and bursting into a fireball.
The Moscow Times could not independently verify those reports.
Chuvashia’s Prime Minister Oleg Artamonov said “several victims” remained under the supervision of medics while other impacted residents were offered shelter in temporary centers.
A drone and missile threat remained active in the region on Tuesday afternoon, as public transit was halted and schools were ordered to switch to online classes, Artamonov added. He said authorities were considering whether to declare a region-wide state of emergency.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Tuesday that a long-range F-5 Flamingo missile was used to strike a Russian “military production site” in Chuvashia, around 900 kilometers (560 miles) away from the Russian border with Ukraine.
Zelensky claimed the facility supplied navigation components used in missiles and military vehicles.
Meanwhile, in Ukraine, Russian overnight strikes killed at least five people across the country, authorities said.
