Mullet Hems Are Back with a Vengeance

From peplum tops to “millennial mint” colorways, 2010s-era trends are back with a vengeance. Across the Spring 2027 runways in Copenhagen, New York and London (so far), mullet — or high-low — hems are the latest throwback silhouette to make a resurgence after their 2010s heyday.

The style’s moniker speaks for itself: Just like a good ol’ Midwestern mullet, the hemline is short in the front (party) and long in the back (business). Depending on your persuasion, it’s a welcome return for nostalgiamaxxers like myself — my very 2017 homecoming look was a black mullet-hem dress — or merely a reminder that everything comes back around in fashion.

Wherever you fall, designers are breathing new life into the knee-baring silhouette this season. Back in the 2010s, celebrities like Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga and Selena Gomez rocked a rather bulky version of the style, but now, the hemline is noticeably lighter and sleeker. Over in Copenhagen, Almada Label and The Garment introduced sheer, breezy iterations that mirrored the movement of gauzey capes. The Danish designers also played with textures, as seen in By Malene Birger’s feather-detailed mullet tank, Herskind’s fringe-tipped top and OpéraSport’s tactile dresses.

In New York City, minimalist mullets at Lii and Michael Kors juxtaposed billowing high-low trains at Christian Cowan and Aknvas. Several designers took more of a sideways approach to the mullet hem’s asymmetry: Monse, Simkhai and LaQuan Smith all draped the hemline over one leg, rather than equally baring both knees. Meanwhile, Bibhu Mohapatra presented feather-lined mullet hems, while Conner Ives reimagined the silhouette as a drop-waist mint green slip.

The London designers had some fun with the asymmetrical hem (the Brits love a mullet, after all) as Erdem unveiled bustle-like skirts, Bora Aksu explored a particularly frilly interpretation and Dreaming Eli embraced high-low lace dresses. For its London Fashion Week return, McQueen debuted bulbous knee-baring gowns that heightened the drama of the 2010s-era red-carpet mainstay. Also intriguing: Keburia applied Grecian-like draping to the mullet-hem silhouette, Lovebirds paired bright-yellow bloomers with an elongated skirt and Aaron Esh’s sheer layered slip dresses revealed colored tights.

With Milan Fashion Week in full swing and Paris on the horizon, we’ll likely see even more of the high-low hemline that once had millennial celebrities in a chokehold. Ahead, see all of the mullet-hem looks from the Spring 2027 runways (so far).
