Nagpur: To recover pending electricity dues, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has intensified its crackdown on defaulters across Nagpur circle, disconnecting over 21,000 power connections within over two weeks of launching a special drive. The recovery campaign, which began on March 1, gathered momentum with strict action against consumers who failed to pay their bills despite repeated notices. As of March 16, electricity supply to 21,308 defaulters has been disconnected, signalling the utility’s firm stance against non-payment.The Nagpur circle, covering Nagpur and Wardha districts, has a total of 19.46 lakh low-tension (LT) consumers. Officials said the disconnections were carried out against habitual defaulters who did not respond to multiple reminders. To further accelerate the drive, senior officials have taken direct charge of field operations. Chief engineer Dilip Dodke and superintending engineer Amit Paranjape recently conducted an on-ground inspection in Kamal Chowk area under the Lashkaribagh subdivision of the Civil Lines division. During the visit, they directed teams to expedite recovery, particularly from commercial and industrial consumers. The strict measures appear to be yielding results. According to MSEDCL officials, 13,644 consumers have cleared their pending dues following disconnection notices and have since had their electricity supply restored.Authorities have urged consumers to take the drive seriously, warning that disconnection not only causes inconvenience but also increases financial burden. Once the supply is cut, consumers have to pay the outstanding bill along with late payment charges, interest, and reconnection fees, significantly raising the total payable amount. With summer approaching, officials cautioned that power disconnection could lead to both discomfort and economic losses. They also highlighted that with the financial year-end nearing and consecutive bank holidays ahead, last-minute payments could face delays due to heavy rush or technical issues.MSEDCL has appealed to consumers to avoid waiting until the deadline and instead clear their dues promptly through its official mobile app or authorised payment centres to prevent disconnection.
