MS Dhoni has returned to the nets for Chennai Super Kings, offering a positive sign for the side even as there is no official confirmation on his return to match action in the Indian Premier League 2026 season. Sportstar reported that Dhoni, who has been recovering from a calf strain and was ruled out for the first two weeks of the tournament, was recently seen batting during a training session ahead of CSK’s upcoming fixtures. His presence at practice has sparked excitement among fans, although the franchise is expected to take a cautious approach and has not specified a timeline for his comeback.
CSK’s struggles in his absence were evident in their opening match against the Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati. Batting first, Chennai were bowled out for 127 in 19.4 overs, failing to build partnerships or attain momentum in the innings. The lack of a reliable finisher, a role Dhoni has mastered over the years, was clearly visible, as the side struggled to accelerate, especially at the death. In response, Rajasthan chased down the target with ease, reaching 128/2 in just 12.1 overs to seal an emphatic eight-wicket victory. The comfortable chase exposed CSK’s problems not just with the bat, but also in their on-field execution.
On Wednesday evening, CSK posted a video of Dhoni carrying his kitbag on the field, and when prodded, he could be seen telling someone, “Don’t listen to him”, presumably answering a query about whether he will play.
CSK missed Dhoni
Besides his batting, Dhoni’s absence was felt behind the stumps and in leadership roles. He is known for his calm decision-making and his ability to guide bowlers in pressure situations. His presence often shapes CSK’s game. The team looked slightly off at crucial moments, particularly in managing the game and setting field placements without him.
The focus shifts to CSK’s next fixture, a home clash against Punjab Kings at Chepauk. The five-time champions will be keen to get back on track. Playing at home could give them an edge, especially on surfaces they understand well and which typically assist their bowling attack.
However, much will depend on how quickly CSK address their batting concerns and whether Dhoni regains full fitness. His return to training is an encouraging sign, but the team management is likely to prioritise long-term fitness over a rushed comeback. As the tournament progresses, CSK will be hoping for improved performances. Dhoni’s availability remains a key factor, but for now, the side must regroup and respond strongly in their next game.
