Times News NetworkPanchkula: What began as a fun outing to Thapli near Morni turned tragic for a 22-year-old youth from Ram Darbar, Chandigarh, who drowned in the Ghaggar river on Sunday. The deceased, Abhishek, a BA third-year student, was part of a group of eight friends who visited Morni hills on their motorcycles. He reportedly slipped into a deep patch while swimming in the river. Police said the stretch of the river appears shallow, with slow moving water but has sudden deep pockets of around 15 to 16 feet. “The group failed to notice the depth variation. The youth likely did not know how to swim and got trapped in a deep section,” said a police official. His friends tried to rescue him and raised an alarm. Locals and police rushed to the spot and pulled him out. They took him to the civil hospital in Panchkula, where doctors declared him brought dead. Abhishek worked part time to support his family. Police have cautioned visitors to remain careful while entering rivers in the Morni area, as uneven depth and hidden deep patches can pose serious risks. MSID:: 130039709 413 |
