Panaji: The chances of the monsoon withdrawing early from the remaining parts of Maharashtra, including Goa, have increased, with atmospheric conditions expected to become more favourable for its further withdrawal from the neighbouring state and adjoining regions over the next few days.According to the IMD bulletin, the withdrawal line currently passes through Supaul, Ranchi, Raipur, Brahmapuri, Parbhani, Baramati and Harnai.“The southwest monsoon has started withdrawing from the Indian subcontinent quite early this year,” said MR Ramesh Kumar, retired chief scientist at NIO and a meteorologist.“Hopefully it should withdraw from the state too, in a few days, thus ending one of the driest monsoon seasons for the past several decades,” he said.Kumar said the post-monsoon or northeast monsoon is also expected to set in over southeast India within a few days.On Sunday, the sun blazed through the afternoon, creating sultry conditions, before skies turned overcast towards evening. Light rain was reported in a few areas, including central Goa and the ghat areas.In the 24 hours till Sunday morning, Sanguem recorded 2.9mm of rain and Sanquelim 0.6mm. The state’s average rainfall during the period was just 0.2mm.The normal rainfall for this stage is 39.6mm, resulting in a 99.4% deficit.The IMD, Panaji, has forecast light to moderate rain at a few places in both districts over the next few days, mainly in the ghat areas.
