Mohali: The municipal corporation (MC) Mohali has decided to introduce an integrated garbage cleaning and collection system to streamline sanitation operations and ensure timely disposal of waste generated during cleaning activities across the city. The move follows concerns raised by several councillors over the existing arrangement, under which different agencies handle separate sanitation-related tasks. At present, one agency undertakes cleaning of road gullies, roadside areas, wild growth and tree-related waste, while another is responsible for lifting and disposing of the waste generated during these operations.Municipal commissioner Sundeep Singh Garha said the proposed system would address coordination gaps and improve accountability. Under the new arrangement, the MC will float two separate tenders, but the entire operation will be entrusted to a single company.“At present, different agencies are handling cleaning and lifting of waste, which sometimes leads to coordination issues. Under the integrated system, one agency will be responsible for both cleaning operations and lifting of the waste generated. This will ensure greater accountability and timely clearance of waste,” Garha said.He said the objective was to make sanitation services more efficient and prevent waste generated during cleaning activities from remaining unattended on roadsides and other public places.Under the proposed system, the selected agency will undertake cleaning of road gullies, removal of roadside waste and wild growth, tree-related cleaning work, and lifting of all waste generated during these operations. The agency will also be required to ensure prompt disposal of the collected waste.MC officials said bringing interlinked sanitation activities under a single mechanism is expected to improve the city’s overall cleanliness. They believe the arrangement will also make it easier to fix responsibility in the event of delays or lapses. The tendering process will define the scope of work, operational responsibilities and monitoring mechanism. The civic body will monitor the agency’s performance to ensure sanitation services are delivered as per prescribed standards.Officials said the integrated approach is aimed at strengthening the city’s garbage management system and providing residents with more efficient and responsive sanitation services.
