Dibrugarh: In a push towards industrial self-reliance and economic diversification, Tinsukia MLA Sanjoy Kishan on Monday laid the foundation stones for four major industrial projects at the Plastic Park in Tinsukia.The new facilities, spanning diverse sectors from biotechnology to speciality food processing, are set to harness the region’s rich natural resources and creating substantial employment opportunities for local youth.The foundation-laying ceremony marked the commencement of a herbal extraction unit, a north east spices manufacturing & value addition hub, the Woolah Tea Factory, and a dedicated biotechnology plant. These projects collectively aim to transform the industrial landscape of Tinsukia by moving beyond traditional resource extraction toward high-value manufacturing and innovation.Speaking at the event, Kishan highlighted the transformative potential of these initiatives for the local economy.“Today is a historic day for Tinsukia and the entire northeast region. These four projects are going to create an ecosystem where our local farmers, entrepreneurs, and youth can thrive. We are taking the immense natural wealth of Assam — our herbs, our spices, our tea — and giving it a global platform through modern technology and processing,” Kishan said.The herbal extraction unit will focus on the scientific processing of medicinal and aromatic plants indigenous to the region, aiming to integrate traditional botanical knowledge with modern pharmaceutical standards. Meanwhile, the spices manufacturing hub is designed to revolutionise the way northeastern spices reach the market, with a focus on quality certification and value-added packaging to boost farmer incomes and reduce post-harvest losses.In a move to strengthen Assam’s global footprint in the tea sector, the Woolah Tea Factory will serve as a state-of-the-art processing and branding facility for premium and artisanal teas. This project is expected to position northeast India as a serious contender in the international speciality tea market. The fourth project, a biotechnology Plant, will focus on agri-biotech innovation and microbial fermentation, serving as a catalyst for research collaboration and startup incubation in the region.Kishan highlighted the govt’s broader vision for the area, adding, “These projects reinforce the state’s commitment to sustainable economic growth, employment generation, and the holistic development of the region. By building a future-ready, knowledge-driven economy here in Tinsukia, we are ensuring that the benefits of development reach every household.”The Plastic Park at Gelapukhuri, spread across 177.52 acres, is a dedicated industrial infrastructure project implemented by the Assam Industrial Development Corporation (AIDC). Initially conceived to promote plastic processing units utilising raw materials from the nearby Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited (BCPL) in Dibrugarh, the park has evolved into a multi-sector industrial hub. With over 104 plots and industrial sheds equipped with reliable power, water supply, and modern waste treatment facilities, the park provides an ideal ecosystem for manufacturing.The addition of these four projects marks a strategic shift towards leveraging the region’s agricultural and botanical strengths, promising to create high-skill employment and drive export revenues for years to come.
