Kolkata: Barrackpore MLA Kaustav Bagchi alleged that men on motorcycles arrived outside his home on Wednesday night, threatened to hurl bombs and shoot, and verbally abused him. Six people were detained after a complaint was lodged at the Titagarh Police Station on Thursday.Bagchi claimed it was a planned incident, which was a fallout of his demand for a fresh investigation into the murder of BJP functionary Manish Shukla in Titagarh. He accused former Trinamool chairperson of Barrackpore Municipality Uttam Das as well as some BJP functionaries of being involved.According to residents of the area, five men arrived on two motorcycles and repeatedly rode past Bagchi’s house, shouting abuses and death threats. Bagchi claimed they threatened to “bomb and shoot” him. He also alleged that several local Trinamool members, including Das, were trying to join BJP with the support of certain BJP functionaries but he opposed the move. “While riding past my house, they shouted they would ‘deal with the MLA’, throw bombs and open fire. They used abuses. Ever since I demanded an investigation into Manish Shukla’s murder, many have become restless. Some Trinamool members are desperate to join BJP, and unfortunately some functionaries of our party are equally eager to accommodate them. I opposed it, and that is why I believe, I am being targeted. There is a possibility of a deadly attack on me,” Bagchi alleged..The MLA also released CCTV clips, purportedly showing three men on a bike, passing by his home. He said he was not at home when the incident occurred and the threats were intended to scare his family.Das said the accused were detained. “It was the handiwork of a few young boys. I am no longer associated with the Trinamool or the BJP. I have resigned from the post of the municipal chairperson as well. The allegations against me are completely baseless.” said Uttam Das.A senior Barrackpore Commissionerate officer confirmed the detentions.
