Mandya: Emphasising that development is the foremost duty of elected representatives, Mandya MLA P Ravikumar announced a series of infrastructure initiatives for the Govt Women’s College (autonomous) while inaugurating ‘Janapada Jathre-2026,’ a folk festival organised in connection with Kannada Rajyotsava celebrations.Addressing students and faculty, Ravikumar said that govt has approved the construction of a modern ladies’ lounge at the college at an estimated cost of Rs 1 crore. The proposed facility will include air-conditioned amenities designed to provide a comfortable space for women students.He said construction work is expected to begin within the next 10 days, adding that there’s need to improve the college’s infrastructure. Noting that sections of the compound wall are in a dilapidated condition, he said a proposal seeking Rs 3 lakh for repairs has already been submitted to the govt. In addition, Ravikumar assured that the main entrance of the college will be renovated this year to enhance the institution’s appearance and facilities.Encouraging students to focus on academic excellence, Ravikumar said the reputation of an educational institution depends on the achievements of its students. He also announced that he would personally award Rs 3 lakh in prizes to meritorious students.He invited students and parents to attend a large cultural gathering scheduled on April 30 at Mandya University campus, where nearly one lakh students are expected to participate.Earlier, the celebrations began with a colourful procession featuring traditional folk performances like Dollu Kunitha, Tamate and Nagari. In a symbolic tribute to rural culture, Ravikumar arrived at the venue in a bullock cart.
