Aizawl: Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), Mizoram’s apex students’ body, has appealed to the All Assam Students’ Union (Aasu) to intervene in the case involving the alleged gang rape of two minor Mizo girls from Kolasib district in Assam’s Cachar district on Aug 3, urging it to help ensure a fair and speedy trial.In a letter to Aasu president on Friday, MZP expressed deep concern over the incident, saying it has caused widespread anguish in Mizoram, particularly among students. It said three people have been arrested and booked under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Posco) Act, 2012.While appreciating the Assam Police’s prompt action, MZP said arrests were only the first step. It urged Aasu to closely monitor the investigation and engage with Assam government and investigating agencies to ensure the process remains fair, transparent and free from undue influence.MZP also called for an expeditious prosecution and trial, and for those found guilty to be punished commensurate with the offences.Recalling the organisations’ longstanding association under North East Students’ Organisation (NESO), the MZP said they share a commitment to justice, human dignity and the welfare of people across the Northeast.MZP said the case concerns not only the two victims, but also the safety and dignity of students and young women travelling, studying or working away from home. It said it is confident the AASU will use its voice and influence to ensure justice is neither delayed nor denied.The MZP also expressed hope that both organisations will continue to demonstrate solidarity under the NESO banner in protecting vulnerable people and upholding the rule of law.
