Aizawl: The impact study committee on the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project (KMMTTP) and the Bairabi-Sairang railway link submitted its final draft report to CM Lalduhoma on Wednesday.The KMMTTP, being implemented by the Centre under the Act East Policy, aims to connect Mizoram with southeast Asia through Sittwe port in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, while also linking the northeast and the mainland via Kolkata port.Lalduhoma lauded the committee for completing the report in 10 months, ahead of the 12-month deadline. He said his govt will continue to seek its assistance in following up on the recommendations.The report examines the present and future prospects of cross-border trade between Mizoram and Myanmar, revenue collection and taxation mechanisms, and measures to facilitate the export of Mizoram’s products.The committee said traders and logistics providers were already benefiting from existing cross-border activities. It also recommended that Mizoram traders develop proficiency in Zakhai or Burmese to improve communication and business engagement.

The panel stressed the need to raise public awareness about security requirements and legal compliance ahead of the KMMTTP’s expected operationalisation in 2027.On railway connectivity, it highlighted the need for effective implementation of the Inner Line Permit system, proper approach roads to all stations and measures to address high taxi fares between Sairang and Aizawl.The committee, headed by Zoram People’s Movement MLA T Lalhlimpuia, visited Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and West Bengal to study the impact of major connectivity projects. It will continue working with the government to implement its recommendations.
