Aizawl: Mizoram has recorded an estimated Rs 656.76 crore in damages from various disasters over the past five years, while the economic loss was assessed at Rs 634.35 crore. The total requirement for recovery and reconstruction has been pegged at Rs 879.82 crore, according to the Post Disaster Needs Assessment report covering the period 2021-2025.The report was tabled at a meeting of the State Disaster Management Authority chaired by chief minister Lalduhoma at the Chief Minister’s Conference Hall in Aizawl on Thursday evening. It identified Cyclone Remal (May 2024), the African Swine Fever outbreak since 2021, heavy rainfall and landslides, and a rodent outbreak in parts of the state in 2025 as major events affecting Mizoram.The meeting reviewed the Mizoram State Disaster Management Plan 2026 and the Disaster Management Plans prepared by all 11 districts. Officials said the state has set up Project Management Units for the National Landslide Risk Mitigation Project, the National Earthquake Risk Mitigation Project, and the Mitigation Scheme for Forest Fire Risk Management, and discussed steps to strengthen the PMUs for effective implementation.Deliberations also covered continued implementation of the Emergency Response Support System; selection of 178 projects under the Recovery and Reconstruction Fund for 2024-25 involving Rs 11.44 crore; procurement of additional search-and-rescue equipment; and a proposal to declare ASF a state-specific disaster without a fixed time frame for assistance from the State Disaster Response Fund.Disaster management requirements and concerns of Mizoram were also presented to NDMA member Rita Massal, who attended the meeting.The meeting was attended by Home minister K Sapdanga, PWD minister Vanlalhlana, health minister Lalrinpuii, power and electricity minister F Rodingliana, Food, civil supplies and consumer affairs minister B Lalchhanzova, disaster management and rehabilitation minister Lalnilawma, and senior govt officials.
