Aizawl: The Mizo Peace Accord, signed on June 30, 1986, was among the most successful accords signed by the Centre, and the peace it brought has stood the test of time, deputy speaker of the Mizoram state legislative assembly Lalfamkima said in Aizawl on Monday. Lalfamkima was addressing a seminar titled, “40 Years of Harmony: Legislative Dialogue on Peace Building”, organised by the Zoram Research Foundation (ZoRF) in collaboration with the India Peace Centre and the Aijal Club to mark the the historic ‘Remna Ni’ (Peace Day) Ruby Jubilee. The event was attended by legislators and former legislators.Lalfamkima said Mizoram was in chaos before the 1986 accord, with explosions, gunfire and the cries of innocent civilians. He praised former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and former underground Mizo National Front leader Laldenga for their efforts in bringing peace, and also praised the church and civil society organisations for their contributions.A discussion on the value of peace was held following a presentation by Michael Angelious, director of India Peace Centre, National Council of Churches in India (NCCI), Nagpur. Participants in the discussion emphasised the need to preserve peace and speedy development under peaceful condition.
