Rumours about Mithun Chakraborty and Sridevi‘s relationship have persisted for decades, with speculation ranging from a secret marriage to an eventual separation. While neither Mithun nor Sridevi ever publicly confirmed being married, senior entertainment journalist Jyothi Venkatesh has now revisited those claims, alleging that the two had briefly lived together as husband and wife.Speaking to Hindi Rush, Venkatesh claimed that the actors shared a domestic life for a short period.“If you’re asking whether they shared a close bond, they were actually living together as a married couple for about three months,” he said.
‘Everyone knew they were together’
Recalling an outdoor shoot, Venkatesh said he witnessed that phase firsthand.“There was an outdoor shoot of Mithun’s that I had gone to. Sridevi never used to come to the sets. She would stay in the room, but everyone knew they were together,” he recalled.The veteran journalist also shared a light-hearted exchange he had with Mithun at the time.“Mithun was quite a good friend of mine. I even joked with him. I said, ‘Mithun sir, now you must have learnt Tamil.’ He immediately understood what I was hinting at and said, ‘Please don’t speak to me in Tamil. Just ask me how I am.’ The reference, of course, was to Sridevi.”
Why the relationship allegedly didn’t last
When asked why the relationship ended, Venkatesh pointed to compatibility issues and the circumstances surrounding the two stars at the time.“There were compatibility issues. Also, at that point, Sridevi was the Sridevi. Mithun was a successful actor, but Sridevi had become a phenomenon.”He further added, “Mithun had gone through different relationships before that, so at the time people felt he couldn’t really be trusted in a relationship.”However, Venkatesh noted that Mithun’s marriage to Yogeeta Bali ultimately stood the test of time.“Even when he married Yogeeta Bali after divorcing his first wife, Helena Luke, many people didn’t believe that marriage would last. But they’ve now been married for many years. They have three sons and an adopted daughter.”
The long-standing rumours
Though neither Mithun nor Sridevi ever confirmed their marriage, rumours about their relationship first surfaced in the late 1980s. According to long-circulated reports, the two met on the sets of Jaag Utha Insaan in the early 1980s, where their on-screen chemistry reportedly blossomed into a real-life romance.Several reports over the years have claimed that the actors secretly married in 1985 and remained together until 1988. At the time, however, Mithun was already married to Yogeeta Bali, whom he had wed after divorcing his first wife, Helena Luke. The alleged relationship was also said to have created a major crisis in Mithun and Yogeeta’s marriage.Reports further claimed that Sridevi eventually ended the relationship after realising Mithun would not leave his wife. She later married producer Boney Kapoor in 1996, and the couple welcomed daughters Janhvi Kapoor and Khushi Kapoor, both of whom are now actors.Neither Mithun Chakraborty nor Sridevi ever publicly confirmed these reports, and the alleged marriage has remained the subject of speculation for decades.
