Vadodara: From Thursday morning, the daily cup of tea, children’s breakfast, and households’ most essential kitchen staple will all become costlier as India’s two biggest dairy brands — Amul and Mother Dairy — roll out fresh milk price hikes across the country amid rising production and operational costs. The revisions are set to pinch consumers nationwide at a time when families are already battling inflated household expenses in wake of the fuel crisis triggered by the Middle-East war.The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which markets dairy products under the Amul brand, on Wednesday announced a hike of Rs 2 per litre in prices of fresh pouch milk across major variants and packs sold across India.GCMMF said the increase works out to nearly 2.5% to 3.5% per litre, which it described as lower than the average food inflation rate. The federation also pointed out that Amul has not revised milk prices since May 2025.The cooperative attributed the latest increase to rising operational and milk production costs, including higher expenditure on cattle feed, milk packaging film and fuel over the past year.GCMMF further stated that its member unions have increased milk procurement prices paid to farmers by Rs 30 per kg fat, marking a 3.7% rise over May 2025 levels.According to GCMMF, nearly 80 paise of every rupee consumers pay for milk and milk products is passed on to milk producers under the cooperative structure. The federation said the revision would help ensure remunerative prices for dairy farmers and encourage higher milk production. This is the second consecutive annual revision by Amul. The last hike took effect on May 1, 2025, when the cooperative increased milk prices by Rs 2 per litre across India. Before that, Amul had revised milk prices in June 2024 by Rs 2 to Rs 3 per litre across variants.Amul milk price hike
