Miley Cyrus and Dolly Parton were extremely close, and the country musician, who recently passed away at the age of 80, was also the pop singer’s godmother. During one of her recent interviews, the 33-year-old opened up about how she has been dealing with Parton’s passing and the life lessons the singer left her with over the years.

During a recent chat with Zane Lowe, Cyrus opened up about her latest album, ‘Bass Persuades,’ how life has been treating her, and how she has been since the ‘Jolene’ singer’s passing. During the interview, she opened up about how her approach to music differed from Parton’s; however, their differences brought them together and were actually a good thing in their relationship. “Even though we are so different, that’s what made us so perfect for each other...and she knew this, and I know this,” she commented.She further added, “So much of my life was about persona,” she said. “And I think a way that I could look at that as, ‘You can have a persona and still be who you are,’ is because I had Dolly.” Dating back to her teen days when she played the pop star Hannah Montana, leading a double life, she shared that Parton always told her she needed a separate persona for her public life, distinct from who she really was on a personal level.

Another anecdote Cyrus, who recently changed her public name to only go by her first name, shared about Dolly was that despite everything they agreed on, there were still some things they couldn’t see eye to eye on. She shared that Parton believed in presenting yourself with professionalism and control and that “music is escapism.” However, the ‘Flower’ singer added that she is someone who cries at every performance, which is something the ‘9 to 5’ star could never comprehend.She added more context and shared, “One of the things we talked about was in my performances, I always cry; I can’t help it. ‘End of the World,’ I start crying, and she watched me on [My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David] Letterman and was like, ‘What are you crying about?’ I was like, ‘I know, but this is like who I am. And she loved me for it.”During the interview, she also shared that after Parton’s passing, she has been holding onto her mentors in the industry. She added, “I know that so many—not just Dolly, which is a unique [relationship], you know, that’s family—but so many of my really stabilising peers that I have in my life, you know, they’re generations before me,” she said. “And they’ve laid down brick by brick the road that I travel now. And they aren’t always going to be here for me to call them and say, ‘What do I do now?’ Which I always did with Dolly. And she was always right.”Meanwhile, on the work front, Miley Cyrus’ latest album, titled ‘Bass Persuades,’ was released worldwide on various streaming platforms on September 18.
