Nagpur: Nagpur Metro Phase-II has completed its first track crossover near Lekha Nagar station on Reach 2A, marking a key step towards operational readiness. The crossover connects the two parallel Metro tracks and will allow trains to switch lines when required.It was successfully cast recently on the Kamptee stretch, which runs from Automotive Square towards Kanhan. A crossover functions as a track-changing junction for Metro trains. The connecting curve has a radius of 300 metres, ensuring gradual and safe movement between the two lines.Officials said crossover construction is among the more precision-intensive components of track work, as even minor variations in geometry and alignment can affect the safe and smooth movement of trains.The work was therefore carried out at night as per a planned schedule, with teams from MahaMetro, its General Consultant and track contractor coordinating the operation.According to MahaMetro, 40 turnouts were installed on the elevated main lines under Nagpur Metro Phase-I. Phase-II will also have 40 turnouts across its elevated main-line sections.Turnouts form the branching portion of the railway track system, while two such turnouts together form a crossover connecting the running lines. These arrangements provide operational flexibility.MahaMetro said track-related works are expected to gain greater prominence across Phase-II corridors as viaduct stretches become available for subsequent systems installation.Apart from track laying, operationalisation of the corridors will require completion and integration of signalling, traction, telecommunications and other Metro systems before trial runs and commissioning.
