Shillong: Against the backdrop of Meghalaya’s poor performance in the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examinations in recent years, the state govt on Wednesday organised “Ascent 2026”, a seminar aimed at improving candidates’ performance in state- and national-level competitive examinations.CM Conrad K Sangma distributed cheques of Rs 50,000 each to candidates who cleared the UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination at the Meghalaya Administrative Training Institute (MATI) campus in Mawdiangdiang, Shillong.Praising MATI for organising the event, Sangma said the initiative was an important step towards the state’s goal of improving results in UPSC and other competitive examinations. He said Meghalaya did not “lack the talent”, but the “ecosystem of bringing these talents together” and providing them with “guidance and support” was not there.“Meghalaya has no shortage of talent. What we need is the right ecosystem of guidance, training, mentorship and financial support to help our young people realise their potential,” he said.Sangma said the CM-Aspire programme is intended to support UPSC aspirants through guidance, training and financial assistance to help them clear different stages of the examination.
