Guwahati: United Democratic Party (UDP) MLA Ollan Singh Suin said eight legislators from his party were in discussions with the BJP and that “anything can happen any time, any day”.

His comment came amid speculation that this group of MLAs is planning to merge with the BJP. Meanwhile, UDP general secretary Titosstarwell Chyne said there was no question of anyone leaving the party.

The UDP has 12 MLAs in the 60-member Meghalaya assembly, while the BJP has two. Both parties are part of the ruling alliance led by the National People’s Party (NPP). Former UDP MLA Jemino Mawthoh joined the BJP on Saturday.
Suin, who represents Mawsynram in the assembly, said on Friday that the group of legislators in touch with the BJP had made certain demands. “We will see once they agree to our demands,” he said, adding: “If the union government agrees to our demands, what is the problem.”
