New Delhi: Medtronic on Wednesday launched a state-of-the-art Mobile Surgi-skill Lab aimed at expanding access to advanced surgical training for young surgeons and healthcare professionals in India’s tier-2 and tier-3 cities.
The mobile lab is designed to provide hands-on training in minimally invasive surgery (MIS) and bring specialised skill development closer to hospitals and medical colleges in underserved regions, the company said in a statement.
Equipped with advanced simulation technology, video-assisted surgical instruments and interactive learning modules, the Mobile Surgi-skill Lab will function as a travelling centre of excellence, enabling surgeons to upgrade their skills without having to travel to metropolitan hubs or disrupt their clinical duties.
“This initiative embodies our vision of equitable healthcare advancement across India,” said Mandeep Singh Kumar, Managing Director and Vice-President, Medtronic India. “By taking surgical training to the doorstep of medical colleges in tier-2 and tier-3 cities, we aim to elevate surgical standards, improve patient outcomes and strengthen healthcare delivery in underserved regions.”
According to Medtronic, the training programme will cover both fundamental and advanced MIS techniques, with customised learning tracks aligned to the needs of regional healthcare facilities. Each engagement will include hands-on practice, mentorship from expert faculty and post-training support to ensure sustained skill development.
Access to specialised surgical training in India has traditionally been concentrated in large cities, contributing to disparities in clinical capabilities across regions. The company said the mobile lab seeks to bridge this gap by ensuring that young surgeons and resident doctors in smaller cities receive training comparable to their peers in metropolitan centres.
“We believe skill excellence is not a privilege but a necessity,” Kumar said, adding that the initiative reflects Medtronic’s commitment to empowering healthcare professionals regardless of geography.
Medtronic has partnered with healthcare institutions and regional medical associations to support the rollout of the programme. As part of the initial roadmap, the Mobile Surgi-skill Lab is expected to visit ten tier-2 cities over the next twelve months, with further expansion planned based on demand and feedback.
