Pune: Online fraudsters cheated a medical practitioner from Sinhagad Road of Rs 95.66 lakh by promising handsome returns on his investment in online share trading.The fraud took place between June 16 and July 23 this year. The 49-year-old medical practitioner lodged a complaint with the Pune cyber police on Saturday.According to the Pune cyber police, the medical practitioner came across an advertisement on a social media platform while scrolling. He clicked on the advertisement, which promised returns of over 100% on investments in shares.Soon after he clicked on the advertisement, his phone number was added to a group on a messaging application. The group administrator immediately sent him a link and asked him to download an application for online share trading.

Initially, the medical practitioner began buying low-value shares using the application.According to the police, the group administrator later contacted the medical practitioner and persuaded him to invest in high-value shares and IPOs. The administrator also promised to help him purchase these shares and IPOs.The fraudsters then claimed they would buy the shares on the medical practitioner’s behalf and shared the details of seven different bank accounts with him. The medical practitioner subsequently transferred a total of Rs 95.66 lakh to these bank accounts, police said.Senior inspector Swapnali Shinde of the Pune cyber police said, “The application showed profits of over Rs 2 crore, and the medical practitioner decided to sell the shares. However, the suspects did not allow him to sell them, following which he realised that he had been cheated.”
