Gurgaon: Medanta Hospital has launched a 24×7 chest trauma support service after an analysis of its own patients across NCR showed chest injuries accounted for nearly 70% of poly-trauma hospital admissions and is also a leading cause of death amongst Indians aged 15-45 years. The study, which analysed 114 chest trauma patients treated between 2021-2025, found that many fatalities are linked not to delays in reaching hospitals but to the absence of specialised care during the critical early hours. Road traffic accidents emerged as the leading cause of chest injuries, accounting for 42% of cases. The newly-launched service will be headed by Dr Arvind Kumar, chairman of the Institute of Chest Surgery at Medanta and aim to strengthen emergency care.

“We will carry out workshops with doctors of different hospitals in North India. We will also provide them technical support on call that will be directly answered by a chest specialist,” Dr Kumar told TOI. Initially, the service will cover Haryana, Punjab and western Uttar Pradesh. Dr Kumar said the findings of the initiative will be useful for policy-making. “We will gather more data in the process and we will be able to share the data outcomes with state govts for policy changes to lower road accidents,” he said.
