Nagpur: The city police on Friday invoked the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against a seven-member fraud gang after Commissioner of Police Vishwas Nangre Patil ordered stringent action.The move follows a June 17 trap by Nandanvan police in which the gang cheated Yavatmal resident Nikhil Chauhan of Rs 50,000 by promising four times the amount and showing him a fake bundle of notes.Accused Parvez Ahmed Md Sharif Patel (50), Avtar Singh, Shahrukh Khan, Ankit Wasnik, Ankit Suryavanshi, Mohammad Mannan and Adnan alias Ashu were arrested. A case was registered at Nandanvan police station. Two other accused remain absconding.The gang leader and his associates face multiple cases of murder, attempt to murder, extortion, assault, cheating and illegal arms. Despite earlier preventive measures, they continued organised crime.Deputy Commissioner of Police Rashmitha Rao and the Nandanvan team submitted a proposal through Sakkardara Division. On August 7, MCOCA sections 3(1)(ii), 3(2) and 3(4) were added. Further probe is being handled by Senior Police Inspector Roshan Pandit.
