Reclaiming the pavement: Mysuru City Corporation personnel use excavators to remove unauthorised structures along KRS Road in Zone 4 Friday as part of a drive to clear footpath encroachments

Mysuru: Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) Friday launched a drive to clear encroachments on footpaths and public spaces, beginning with KRS Road within Zone 4 limits. The enforcement team, assisted by earth excavators, removed more than 30 unauthorised structures, including petty shops, temporary sheds, pushcarts, kiosks, and advertising boards that encroached on sidewalks and roadside spaces. The exercise caught several encroachers by surprise as civic officials moved in early to dismantle illegal structures. Officials said the objective is to restore footpaths for pedestrians, improve road safety and ensure smooth public movement.Encroachments on sidewalks have long forced pedestrians onto roads, increasing the risk of accidents. Officials said the clearance drive will continue in phases across different zones of Mysuru.MCC commissioner MK Savitha told TOI: “The encroachment drive will be taken up in a phased manner. On Friday, we focused on Zone 4.”The MCC has appealed to vendors and occupants of unauthorised structures to voluntarily remove encroachments and cooperate with civic authorities to avoid enforcement action. Elaborate security arrangements were made as a precaution.
