Chandigarh: The municipal corporation, Chandigarh, has decided to deploy round-the-clock security guards and around 10 dedicated gardeners to protect and maintain a newly created green buffer around the Dadumajra dumping site.The move follows the plantation of nearly 10,000-12,000 trees and shrubs across eight acres as part of efforts to develop an ecological barrier around the legacy waste site. The green cover is intended to improve air quality, reduce pollution and enhance the environment for nearby residential areas.MC sources said adequate manpower has been approved to safeguard the plantation and ensure the healthy growth of saplings. “The plantation has been undertaken to create a green buffer around the dumping site. Protecting the saplings and ensuring their growth is now our priority,” sources said.As the site is surrounded by residential colonies, the MC has also reached out to local councillors and residents for support in safeguarding the plantation. Officials said community participation would be crucial in preventing damage to the saplings and ensuring the success of the initiative.The plantation drive was launched earlier this month by Punjab governor and Chandigarh administrator Gulab Chand Kataria during the monsoon season. Once fully developed, the green belt will cover the periphery of the dumping site and benefit adjoining residential areas, stretches along Patiala Ki Rao, Dakshin Marg and the national highway.The plantation includes ornamental and fragrant shrubs such as hibiscus, tecoma, hamelia patens, raat ki rani, chandni and calliandra, along with trees including bamboo, camphor, peepal, pilkhan and ficus benjamina.
