Mapusa: Following a violent clash that left seven injured, the Mapusa sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) has ordered the immediate closure of Shri Simeshwar Rashtroli Brahmin Devasthan at Acoi. The order, issued by deputy collector Varsha Parab, states that the temple will remain closed to the public until further notice to prevent any law and order issues. The dispute, ongoing for over 18 months, escalated on April 1 night. The clash reportedly broke out over the installation of CCTV cameras and electric lighting in the temple by one faction. Cross-complaints have been filed against 22 persons—15 from one group and seven from the other—on charges of assault and rioting. At a failed conciliation meeting on April 6, both sides claimed exclusive ownership and management rights. At the centre of the dispute is a rivalry over a seven-member trust committee led by Sairaj Toraskar, opposed by a group led by Jayesh Kalangutkar.
