Panaji: The unhygienic condition of the Mapusa fish market came to light again during a joint inspection on Wednesday, following repeated complaints from the consumer rights group Goacan.The visit reviewed structural shortcomings and poor waste management linked to the market’s original design by the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA).

The inspection was led by municipal chief officer Kaushik Desai and Mapusa urban health centre officer Dr Dinesh Parab, with officials from the Goa State Pollution Control Board, PWD and Goacan. The team expressed dissatisfaction with existing maintenance schedules and called for tighter upkeep.With the municipality earning revenue from the facility, vendor satisfaction and strict cleanliness standards must be prioritised, said an official.Goacan coordinator Roland Martins said standard operating procedures and guidelines will be drafted with help from the directorate of food and drugs administration, the directorate of health services and the fisheries department to streamline fish market management across Goa.Departments have been told to coordinate remedial measures and submit a detailed report within 15 days.
