CHENNAI: A man who tried to save a woman who jumped in front of an express train died along with her at Maraimalai Nagar railway station on Tuesday.The incident took place at 10.30am, when the train was crossing the station at a high speed. The woman, believed to be aged about 30, who was standing near the tracks, suddenly leaped in front of the train. Seeing this, the man rushed forward in a desperate attempt to save her. However, both were struck by the train and died on the spot due to severe injuries.Railway police from Tambaram reached the spot and sent the bodies to the Tambaram Government Hospital for autopsy. Initial investigation identified the man as Ilangovan, 53, a resident of Thalimangalam village near Maraimalai Nagar. The identity of the woman and the reason behind her suicide were not known, police said. Police have registered a case.Witnesses told police that the woman was seen moving around the station in a desperate manner, looking for trains on the platforms on either side for a while. She later saw the express train from Tiruchendur going towards Chennai Egmore.Police are also examining CCTV camera footage from multiple railway stations to determine where the woman had boarded a train to reach Maraimalai Nagar station.A senior police officer said the two victims did not know each other. The man could have suspected that she might attempt suicide and tried to intervene, police said.
