Chandrapur: A man who stepped in to stop a street fight during Ambedkar Jayanti celebrations was stabbed to death late Monday night. Five men have since been arrested.Ravikant Tembhurkar, 40, also known as Rikki, was fatally stabbed when he and 21-year-old Aniket Galbale attempted to defuse a fight that broke out among a group of youths near Gandhi Chowk around 11.30pm. Tembhurkar died en route to hospital. Galbale sustained injuries and has been admitted in a hospital.The violence erupted during a procession by Bhimratna Bahuuddeshiya Yuva Sanstha from Indira Nagar, one of several rallies held citywide to mark the occasion. As participants danced to DJ music at Gandhi Chowk, an altercation among youths escalated rapidly — ending in knife attack on the two men who tried to intervene.Deputy superintendent of police Pramod Chougule, present at the scene, immediately detained one accused, Rehan Pathan. Within two hours, four more suspects — Badal Bhaisare, Chetan Sonawane, Sheikh Zeeshan, and a juvenile — were arrested by local crime branch and city police teams.Investigators believe Bhaisare brought the knife to the rally, which Pathan used in the attack. All five accused are Chandrapur residents.A case has been registered at the city police station. Investigations are on.
