Jammu, Sep 18 : A birthday celebration turned fatal in Jammu after a man was allegedly murdered over cake-smearing, with police arresting the accused within hours.

In a handout to GNS, the police said that police Post GMC Jammu informed Police Station Janipur that one person namely Pawan Nair alias Sameer was brought to GMC Jammu in an injured condition by his friends John Sotra, Gaurav Singh and Sugandh Bhatti and was declared brought dead by the attending doctors.

Acting swiftly on the information, a police team of Police Station Janipur rushed to GMC Jammu and enquired into the matter.

Preliminary enquiry revealed that on 17.09.2026, Neeraj alias Anshu was celebrating his birthday roadside near Lower Roop Nagar where his friends John Sotra, Gaurav Singh, Sugandh Bhatti and Pawan Nair alias Sameer were present. Neeraj was accompanied by his brother Rishu.

During cutting of cake, deceased Pawan Nair alias Sameer applied cake on the face of Neeraj, over which both entered into a verbal duel. When John, Gaurav and Sugandh tried to pacify them, Neeraj got enraged, took out a Khokhri which he was carrying and attacked Pawan Nair alias Sameer on his neck causing grievous injury.

The injured was immediately shifted to GMC Jammu by his friends where he was declared brought dead.

Taking cognizance of the incident, FIR under Section 103(1) BNS has been registered at Police Station Janipur and investigation taken up.

Acting promptly, both the accused namely Neeraj alias Anshu and his brother Rishu have been apprehended and are presently in police custody at Police Station Janipur. The weapon of offence Khokhri is being recovered. Further investigation is in progress and the body of deceased has been shifted to mortuary for post-mortem examination.

Jammu Police assures strict and time-bound action against the accused as per law.(GNS)
