ROURKELA: A 28-year-old woman sustained severe burn injuries after her alleged jilted lover sprayed petrol into the room where she was sleeping and set it on fire in Odisha’s Sundargarh district, police said on Saturday.The incident occurred around 1 am on Saturday at Santoshpur village under Bisra police limits in Rourkela, according to news agency PTI. According to police, the accused was spotted by one of the victim’s family members while allegedly spraying petrol through a pipe and lighting a matchstick.Preliminary investigations suggest that the accused used a pipe to pour petrol into the room through a window before igniting the fuel. The woman suffered critical burn injuries and was rescued by her family members, who rushed her to a private hospital in Rourkela. Police said doctors have described her condition as serious.“Petrol was poured into her room through a pipe, and then fire was set,” the victim’s father Jena Toppo said.He alleged that Rajat Kiro was the person responsible for the incident. “My younger brother’s wife had seen Kiro near the window of the room where my daughter was sleeping,” the father claimed.According to the father, his daughter, a graduate employed with an agency, had rejected Kiro’s marriage proposal, which may have led to the incident. He also alleged that the accused had harassed her on several occasions in the past.Police have launched an investigation and are examining the case with the assistance of scientific teams. No arrests have been made so far, officials said.
