Kanpur: A 35-year-old man from Akbarpur in Kanpur Dehat has married his 52-year-old mother-in-law after developing a close relationship with her, a move that has sparked widespread discussion in the area.Locals said the man was married about a year ago, but his relationship with his mother-in-law reportedly grew over time. They claimed that after his 27-year-old wife learnt about the affair and confronted the two, the marriage broke down. According to reports, the man and his mother-in-law solemnised a court marriage a few days ago.The matter came into the spotlight after a video purportedly showing the couple surfaced on social media on Sunday and quickly went viral. In the footage, the pair can be seen wearing garlands, displaying what appears to be a marriage certificate and claiming that they entered into the marriage with mutual consent.They also appealed to people to accept their relationship and bless their union. The video, said to have originated from the Akbarpur area, was shared with a caption claiming that the son-in-law had married his mother-in-law, accompanied by a song themed around court marriages.However, the authenticity of the video and the alleged marriage could not be independently verified. No official confirmation regarding the marriage, its date or venue has been made available by authorities.As the clip spread online, it drew mixed reactions. While some social media users described the matter as a personal choice between consenting adults, others raised ethical and social concerns, triggering a broader debate. The episode also prompted comparisons with a recent case reported from Aligarh involving a similar relationship.Akbarpur police station in-charge Harmeet Singh said police have initiated an inquiry into the viral video. He said no formal complaint has been received from any party so far and no cognisable offence has been reported.
