Chennai: A man killed his 40-year-old wife and nine-year-old daughter while they were asleep at their home in Thiru Vi Ka Nagar in the early hours of Sunday. Police identified the accused as Srinivasan, a security guard at a private hospital in Anna Nagar. He lived on Devaki Ammal Street in Vetrinagar with his wife Sivaranjini, daughter Harini, a Class IV student, son Pranav, 15, and his mother Mythili, 65. While Mythili stayed on the ground floor, the rest of the family lived on the first floor.According to police, Srinivasan had been undergoing treatment for mental health issues for the past two years and was on medication. However, he reportedly began exhibiting violent behaviour after discontinuing his medication a few months ago. Police said the couple frequently argued over his condition, and Sivaranjini had threatened to leave him.On Saturday night, an argument reportedly broke out again after Srinivasan returned home from work. During the altercation, Sivaranjini told him that her parents were planning to arrange her remarriage. The family later went to sleep.In the early hours, Srinivasan woke up, slit the throats of his wife and daughter, and fled.The crime was discovered when Pranav went upstairs in the morning and found his mother and sister lying in a pool of blood. He alerted his grandmother, who informed the police.The bodies were recovered and sent for postmortem examination to a govt hospital. A case has been registered, and a search was launched to trace the accused.Police tracked Srinivasan using his mobile phone signal, when later in the day, he reportedly contacted his son. This helped police pinpoint his location in Ambattur, where he was arrested.He is currently in custody, and further investigation is underway.
