Kolkata: A Burrabazar businessman was killed after the app-based bike on which he was travelling pillion collided with a truck at Keshtopur crossing on VIP Road on Tuesday night. Police said the bike rider was allegedly riding recklessly and attempted to overtake the truck from its left side, entering the driver’s blind spot.The deceased, Manoj Rathi (65) , dealt in ball pens in Burrabazar and was returning to his home in Rajarhat when the accident occurred. He died on the spot, while the bike rider, who was flung to the left side of the road, suffered injuries.According to police, CCTV footage showed the bike travelling at high speed and squeezing between two buses before the rider tried to move from the left lane to the right while overtaking the truck. The collision occurred as the bike came into the truck driver’s blind spot, police said.“As of now, it looks like the app bike rider was at fault. He was riding recklessly, which led to the accident,” a senior officer of Bidhannagar City Police said.Police arrested the truck driver and seized both the truck and the bike. The injured rider is undergoing treatment and will be questioned once doctors declare him fit, the officer said.Rathi was originally from Beadon Street but had moved to Narayanpur in Rajarhat around six months ago. He is survived by his wife and a son who works in Bangalore.
