New Delhi: Delhi Police has arrested a 38-year-old man accused of murdering his live-in partner and her nine-year-old daughter last week in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag. The double murder came to light after a resident of Tilwada village on Friday informed the Jakhole police outpost under Kotwali Rudraprayag about a foul smell emanating from a rented room. The informant told the cops that one Deepak Bahadur from Nepal, who had been living in the room with his family, was not seen for days.

A police team reached the spot and found the room locked. The bodies of the woman and her daughter were discovered inside, reportedly several days after their murders. A case was registered under Section 103 (murder) of the BNS at Rudraprayag police station. Bahadur, identified as the prime accused, was traced near Azadpur Mandi by Uttarakhand Police, who then looped in Delhi Police. DCP (northwest) Akanksha Yadav said, “The team conducted electronic and technical surveillance to track the accused.” He was eventually spotted near New Delhi Railway Station. Police initially faced difficulty in identifying him due to the rush at the station but managed to nab him while he was attempting to board a train to Mumbai. Bahadur told police that he had met the woman on social media, after which he moved in with her and her daughter. He later came to know that she was reportedly involved with another person, leading to frequent quarrels between them. During one such argument, he murdered the two before fleeing. He was handed over to Uttarakhand Police.
