Kendrapada: A 72-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly raping his 12-year-old granddaughter multiple times at a village in Kendrapada district. Police said the girl was living with her other family members, including her grandfather, after her mother eloped with another man two years ago and her father abandoned her after remarrying. Police said the incident took place when the girl was sleeping alone in the house. The accused allegedly raped her several times and threatened to kill her if she disclosed the incident to anyone.The girl later informed her paternal aunt, who lodged an FIR at the police station on Tuesday, alleging that the girl’s grandfather had raped her. “Acting on the FIR, we launched an investigation and arrested the accused,” said investigating officer Naresh Kumar Sahoo. During interrogation, the accused allegedly confessed to the crime.Police booked the accused under BNS section 65(2) (raping a female under 12 years of age) and the Pocso Act, 2012. The accused was produced in a Kendrapara court on Wednesday. The court rejected his bail plea and remanded him in judicial custody, police said. Earlier, police arrested a 56-year-old uncle of the same girl on Sept 4 for allegedly raping her several times. A separate FIR was registered on the complaint of a relative of the survivor.
