Panchkula: The Economic Offences Wing-1 of Panchkula police arrested a man on Thursday in connection with an alleged Rs 1.07 crore fraud related to the sale of a house in Sector 26. The accused, Kapil Chawla, was produced before a court on Friday and remanded in police custody for two days. A cheating case has also been registered against him at Sector 34 police station.Complainant Ashwani Kumar entered into an agreement to purchase the Sector 26 house from Kapil’s father, Ram Prakash Chawla, for Rs 5.2 crore on Dec 18, 2025. The complainant alleged that he paid Rs 1 crore through bank transactions and Rs 7 lakh in cash.While the house was in Ram Prakash’s name, it was Kapil who executed the deal, the complainant said.He added that the Chawlas assured him that the property was free from any dispute or third-party claim and no prior agreement for its sale had been executed.However, he later learnt that an agreement for the same property had allegedly been executed with Mukesh Kumar Goyal on Jan 5, 2024, and that a related dispute was pending in court.Economic Offences Wing-1 in-charge Tajinder Pal Singh said police examined the property documents, statements of the complainant and other records during the investigation. Police also looked into a case that Kapil had previously got registered against Goyal at Sector 14 police station.Police said Kapil was arrested on Sept 17 after allegations that material facts concerning the property had been concealed while obtaining money from the complainant.DCP Panchkula Aditi Singh said complaints concerning financial transactions and alleged fraud had also been received against the accused in the past.During the two-day remand, police will probe the role of Kapil’s father and take further action, including arrest, if evidence warrants it. The financial transactions and property-related dealings are also being examined.
