Kanpur: Prior to his younger brother’s wedding, a man allegedly sexually assaulted his mother-in-law after spiking her drink in Kanpur. He also allegedly recorded explicit videos and photographs of the assault and continued to exploit the woman by threatening to release the footage and call off the wedding.Following a two-month investigation, the Kalyanpur police arrested the accused near Kanpur Central Railway Station late Wednesday night while he was allegedly attempting to flee to Mumbai.The 25-year-old accused, a resident of Chauna Ladpur village in Kanpur Dehat, works in the private sector in Delhi. His wedding was scheduled for April 24. In her written complaint, the 50-year-old survivor claimed that around seven days before the wedding, on April 17, the accused, identified as Sharad’s elder brother, invited her to his room in Kalyanpur on the pretext of purchasing clothes.According to the complaint, the accused offered her a soft drink laced with an intoxicating substance. Shortly after consuming the drink, she lost consciousness. During this period, the accused allegedly raped her and recorded objectionable videos. When she protested after regaining consciousness, he allegedly threatened to call off the wedding.The woman alleged that the accused repeatedly blackmailed her using the videos and photographs, subjecting her to further sexual exploitation.When the accused’s behaviour continued even after the wedding, she narrated her ordeal to her family members. Subsequently, on May 6, she approached the Kalyanpur police station and lodged a complaint.Based on her complaint, the police registered a case under rape and other relevant sections and initiated an investigation. During the probe, police summoned the accused several times for questioning, but he failed to appear and remained absconding.DCP West SM Qasim Abidi said the accused was produced before a court on Thursday and subsequently sent to jail.
