Berhampur: Cyber police at Chhatrapur in Ganjam district arrested a 32-year-old man from Kandhamal district for allegedly cheating a 30-year-old widow of Rs 60 lakh with the false promise of marriage.The accused, father of a child, was identified as Uttam Kumar Sahu of Pasara in Chakapada police station limits.Police said the accused, a BTech who is currently employed in a private firm, and one of his associates created a matrimonial profile on a marriage site. The woman came across Sahu’s profile, who had used a false identity of Sai Krupa Das of Bhubaneswar.Gaining her trust with a false promise of marriage, he fabricated stories about his father’s illness and sent her fake photographs and forged medical documents to obtain money from her.Believing him, the victim mortgaged her gold ornaments, borrowed money from family and friends and transferred about Rs 60 lakh through multiple bank transactions since Aug 2024, police said.Later, as the accused avoided marrying her, the victim lodged a complaint at the cyber police station in Bhubaneswar. The zero FIR was registered at Cyber Crime & Economic Offences Police Station, Bhubaneswar, and was transferred to Cyber Crime & Economic Offences Police Station, Ganjam, Chhatrapur, for investigation.“A mobile phone, ATM cards, ID proofs and cash of Rs 10,000 were seized from his possession,” said Jyoti Ranjan Behera, IIC, cyber police station, Chhatrapur.
