Bengaluru: Financial troubles pushed a delivery agent into crime, leading him to target a 65-year-old woman in Cox Town, central Bengaluru.Saravana, 44, was arrested for following the woman home from a local market, threatening and robbing her of her 65gm mangalsutra. Police also recovered gold and cash worth nearly Rs 7.7 lakh from the AK Colony, Frazer Town, resident.The woman had gone to Mini Bazaar on the afternoon on Sept 9. While returning home, Saravana followed her and entered the woman’s house. He told her, ‘Amma chain kodi, nanu enu madolla’ (Give me the chain, I will not harm you). The woman, however, raised an alarm in panic. Saravana then threatened to kill her if she continued to shout. When he again demanded the chain, the woman removed it and gave it to him. Saravana snatched it and fled. The woman immediately called her son, who was at work, and then alerted police.Cops apprehended Saravana near Tannery Road Circle on Sept 21 and seized his two-wheeler.During questioning, Saravana told investigators he had sold the stolen chain at a jewellery shop in Ganganagar, RT Nagar, and used some of the money to buy household articles and kept the rest. Cops conducted searches and recovered 32 grams of gold bullion, Rs 2,17,200 in cash and three 1-gm gold beads (thali) from the jewellery shop and his house.Police said the first-time offender was facing financial problems and didn’t have enough money to meet daily needs.
