TNNNew Delhi: A 34-year-old man died under suspicious circumstances while in police custody in northwest Delhi’s Jahangirpuri area, though preliminary medical findings have suggested dehydration as the cause of death, police said on Monday.According to police, the man was picked up during routine patrolling after he was found behaving suspiciously in the area on April 19. He was taken to the Jahangirpuri police station around 3.30 am for verification and questioning.Police said that during his stay at the station, the man complained of uneasiness and was given drinking water. His condition deteriorated soon after, and he developed breathlessness. He was rushed to Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial (BJRM) Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.The deceased has been identified as Anish, a resident of Bhalswa Dairy.DCP (Northwest) Akanksha Yadav said the initial medical examination and medico-legal case (MLC) report showed no external injuries or signs of assault. “The preliminary medical opinion points to dehydration as the likely cause of death,” she said.Police added that Anish was in a weakened condition and had a history of illness and substance abuse. His family reportedly told police that he had been consuming alcohol continuously for several days prior to the incident.The exact cause of death will be confirmed after the post-mortem examination.
