Kalyan: The son of a prominent Kalyan builder and local BJP neta allegedly knocked down a 51-year-old scooterist with his electric car in Ulhasnagar on Monday. The victim died during treatment. The accused fled the spot but later surrendered before Kalyan police citing fears of facing mob fury.Ulhasnagar police lodged an FIR against him, seized his vehicle and issued a notice to him as per the law. “The exact circumstances that led to the accident are being ascertained,” said Santosh Awhad, senior Ulhasnagar police inspector.Police said the victim, Devendrasingh Rajput, a resident of Mharal village in Kalyan who worked as a carpenter in Ulhasnagar’s furniture market, had set off for Shahad on a scooter with his son on the pillion. Around 3pm, Avinash Mutha (40), son of Prakash Mutha, who is also a well-known Kalyan jeweller, hit the scooter with his car while returning home near Birla Gate in Shahad. Rajput was thrown onto the road, leaving him critically injured. He was rushed to Central Hospital in Ulhasnagar, where he died during treatment. His son sustained minor injuries.Prakash Mutha had unsuccessfully contested the 2019 assembly polls as an independent. Prior to joining BJP, he was with Congress.
