Midnapore: A man died in a freak accident in West Midnapore’s Sabang on Friday morning when a branch fell on him after monkeys jumped on it and it broke off. The victim, Tarun Panja (48) from the Panpara area of Balpai 9th region under Sabang Police Station, was out to invite relatives for his granddaughter’s rice ceremony. The incident occurred in the Paschimchak area of Jalchak under Pingla police station.Panja was cycling home from his relatives’ house in Pingla when a group of monkeys was jumping from one branch to another on a tree. A large branch broke and fell on Panja’s head as he was passing below. He fell on the road and reportedly bled out at the spot. He was taken to Pingla hospital where doctors declared him dead. Panja’s family was informed about the accident. His body was sent to Kharagpur sub-divisional hospital for a postmortem. The deceased’s brother, Amal Kumar, said the granddaughter’s ceremony was scheduled in four days. Trinamool block president of Sabang and district council member Abu Kalam Box, termed the incident unfortunate and promised to stand by the family.
